Crosstown High

2019 -

Rethink
High School

Crosstown High is a learner-centered public charter school that engages students in meaningful, project-based work and authentic relationships that will prepare them to be self-directed, lifelong learners. Crosstown High is located inside Crosstown Concourse, a landmark adaptive reuse development project in the heart of Memphis once known is the longstanding Sears outlet center.

I was hired by Crosstown High to teach graphic media in the fall of 2019. Since then, my roles as an instructor have allowed me to flourish in my own personal practice. I have been able to create a number of print and social media graphics throughout my time with Crosstown for a number of projects.

Crosstown is the first school of its kind in Memphis, with the inaugural class of 2022 walking through its doors for the first time in the fall of 2018. Crosstown High is one of many project based learning schools in the country established by XQ, the nation's leading organization dedicated to rethinking the high school experience.

These posters were designed for a student led brainstorming session. The goal of this session was to develop cultural and relational standards by placing student voice at the center of the conversation.

This event allows black Crosstown High students the opportunity to promote their own business ventures, sell work, and make community connections.

Below the Surface

Below the Surface is the student literary and visual arts journal of Crosstown High. This project was started by Clare Johnson when she was an artist in residence with Crosstown Arts in 2020.

This poster was designed as an open call to the schools student artists and writers for the submissions to

Volume 2 of the journal. The theme for Volume 2,

"What are your 3AM thoughts?”, was conceptualized

by Crosstown students.
